Glorious Journey was commissioned by the Van Buren High School Band, Ron Smith and Dustin Chambers, Directors to honor Michael Lynn Jones, "Father of the Van Buren Band Program" upon his retirement after 38 years as a music educator in the state of Texas (3 years) and Arkansas. (34 years). Glorious Journey, an overture for band, begins with a short motive played by the horn and trumpet that is heard throughout the piece. A rhythmic motive is introduced by the woodwinds leading to the main theme in the A section. The overall form is ABA. The composer has tried to capture the passion, dedication and enthusiasm for teaching that Mike Jones displays daily. Reflected in the slow section of the piece, are Jones' optimism, sensitivity, musicality and his utmost concern for his students in their everyday life and musical development. After returning to the A section, Glorious Journey ends in a fiery coda.
